Frederick S. Callahan, 97, of Auburn passed away peacefully Tuesday night at the Hospice House in Auburn. He was born in Lewiston on March 25, 1918 a son of the late Sherman and Cora (Staples) Callahan. On December 24, 1939 he married Ruth E. Downing and the two of them had a son, Harold. Fred proudly served his nation in the United States Navy during World War II. Frederick S. Callahan, 97, of Auburn passed away peacefully Tuesday night at the Hospice House in Auburn. He was born in Lewiston on March 25, 1918 a son of the late Sherman and Cora (Staples) Callahan. On December 24, 1939 he married Ruth E. Downing and the two of them had a son, Harold. Fred proudly served his nation in the United States Navy during World War II. After returning from the Navy, he worked construction for a number of years before starting Callahan Bros Inc. with his brother Dan. He was very proud of his business with such accomplishments as the building the Longley bridge in Lewiston/Auburn and the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Bridge in Lubec. He was also a 32nd degree Mason out of the Tyrian Masonic Lodge #73 in Mechanic Falls for over 65 years, as well as a Kora Shriner. He will also be remembered for his love and passion of fishing, hunting and being a devoted Red Sox and Patriots fan. He is survived by his grandchildren; Scott S. Callahan and his wife Katreena of Las Vegas, NV, Nancy Callahan of Auburn and Sean M. Callahan of Alexandria, VA as well as his great-grandchildren Alexander and Sabrina Callahan, many nieces and nephews and several close friends including Maurice Despres and Judith Bubier. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Ruth, his son Harold S. Callahan, three brothers, Herbert, Daniel and Allen Callahan, two sisters Irene Hapgood and Annabelle Callahan and a half-brother, Sherman Callahan. The family wishes to express their sincere thanks to Androscoggin Home Care & Hospice, especially Tammy Bean and Mary Lacroix for their devotion and compassion shown to Frederick in his final days. Visiting hours will be held on Friday April 3 from 4pm to 7pm at Fortin\Auburn. A funeral service at will take place at Gracelawn Memorial Park (Chapman Room) 980 Turner St. Auburn on Saturday April 4 at 1:30pm. Interment will also be at Gracelawn Memorial Park.
